Four common slewing bearing installation measures

Now that you have chosen the appropriate slewing ring for the equipment, it is time to enter the installation phase. Please consider the following four factors to ensure a successful installation.

1.Deformation of the mounting surface

1There are many reasons for the deformation of the mounting surface. Common examples range from excess metal between the bearing and the mounting surface to improper gaskets. However, regardless of the cause of the deformation, the result is incorrect installation which affects the integrity of the product. Deformation of the mounting surface can cause the following problems: load concentration in the bearing; incorrect readings during bolt tensioning; bolt fatigue; total bearing failure.

2. Correct sealing and grease

Slip slewing bearings should be sealed to avoid any factors that may negatively affect bearing performance, such as debris and corrosive elements. The type of seal you choose will vary by application, so be sure to consult a bearing expert during this process. When specifying a slewing ring, lubrication and relubrication should also be given top priority. Generally speaking, the bearings will be pre-lubricated. Once they are installed in the final product, they must be relubricated in time. For some products, this will be a daily job, while for others, only more grease is required per 100 hours of operation. These maintenance procedures should be clearly listed in any manuals related to the final product.

3. Bearing storage

Short-term storage is usually considered when bearings leave the factory. If you plan to receive bearings and leave them on the shelf for a long time, make sure to lubricate the bearings before installation. Once delivering to you and your team, you should also pay attention to how the bearings are handled/stored. If not handled properly, the mounting surface or gear teeth may be damaged. Dirt and other contaminants will also accumulate on the slewing ring, causing installation difficulties.

4. The correct installation procedure

Although the last factor seems obvious, it is often overlooked to follow the correct installation process. First of all, the load plug and hardness gap of the bearing should be located in the minimum load area of the product. If these aspects are placed in a heavy-duty area, premature failure may occur. You should also check the bearing races in this step. After tightening the bolts, the bearing race should be round. Last but not least, the final bearing torque and gear clearance need to be checked after installation. If your bearing has installation problems, the bearing torque after installation will be very different.
